Dato’ Seri Dr. Awang Adek Hussin was appointed as the Chairman of the Board effective 1 July 2024.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Economics from Drew University, USA, as well as a Master’s and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Prior to his appointment as Chairman of BSN, Dato’ Seri Dr. Awang Adek Hussin was the Executive Chairman of the Securities Commission Malaysia. He had served as Malaysia’s Ambassador to the United States of America from 2014 to 2016 and as Chairman of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) from 2017 to 2018.

Dato’ Seri Dr. Awang Adek Hussin has extensive experience in economics and finance, having spent over 30 years in government and public service. He served as Deputy Minister of Rural Development from 2004 to 2006 and as Deputy Minister of Finance from 2006 to 2013. He was also a member of Parliament from 2004 to 2008, and a senator from 2009 to 2013.

He was with Bank Negara Malaysia for 17 years, from 1985 until 2001, holding several positions and eventually rising to the rank of Assistant Governor. He has also served on the boards of directors of several organizations, including the Securities Commission, the Labuan Financial Services Authority (LFSA) as its first Director General, Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) as Chairman, and Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PERNAS) as Chairman.

Dato’ Seri Dr. Awang Adek Hussin is currently the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

Encik Mohd Hassan was appointed to the Board on 15 February 2024.

Encik Mohd Hassan holds a Masters of Economics from the University of Sydney, Australia, a Bachelor of Accountancy (Hons) from the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration from the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN). He is also a Chartered Accountant and a Member of Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA).

He currently served as the Deputy Undersecretary in the Government Investment Companies Division of the Ministry of finance (MoF). He held numerous positions in MoF including Deputy Undersecretary and Head of Fiscal Policy Office in the Fiscal and Economics Division, Head of the Debt and Risk Section and Senior Principal Assistant Secretary in the Balance of Payments Unit.

He has led special tasks such as the formulation of the National Budget for several years since 2001; the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BRIM) ; the setting-up of investor relation office to engage with Credit Rating Agencies (CRAs), investors, analysts and International Monetary Fund Art IV consultation ; formation of liquidity and cash management unit ; establishment of Urban Transformation Centre (UTC); and the issuances of global sukuk. He was also involved in the financial restructuring and rehabilitation in state -owned enterprises such as Tabung Haji and Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA).

He also served as a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors in state-owned enterprises and public listed companies such as FGV Holding Berhad, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), FELDA, Malaysian Sovereign Sukuk Berhad (MSSB) and Public Sector Home Financing Board (LPPSA). He also served as a member of Malays ia Competition Commission (MyCC). He had served as the World Bank Group Executive Director and sub-committee of Budget and Human Resource, representing SEA Group in Washington DC, United States of America.

Presently, Encik Mohd Hassan is also a Non-Independent Director of Prasarana Malaysia Berhad and Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor (PKNS). He is also on the Board of Syarikat Jaminan Kredit Perumahan Berhad, Syarikat Jaminan Pembiayaan Perniagaan Berhad and Hicom Holdings Berhad.

Tuan Haji Selamat Haji Sirat was appointed to the Board on 14 June 2017.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Dubuque, Iowa, USA and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Malaya (UM). He is also a Certified Financial Planner in Islamic Financial Planning.

Tuan Haji Selamat was formerly the Chief Operating Officer, of Al-Rajhi Bank from January 2013 until February 2017, and assumed the post of Acting CEO for almost 18 months. He was responsible for the overall development and implementation of strategic operational direction for Al-Rajhi Bank. He is a qualified banker with more than 33 years of experience working in international banks.

Having served in various capacities as a Corporate Banker, Business Manager for Small and Medium Industry, Consumer Banking and Senior Manager in an Islamic Banking Division, Tuan Haji Selamat has vast experience in all aspects of banking.

Tuan Haji Selamat is a member of the Board Audit and Compliance Committee of Perbadanan Waqf Selangor.

Datin Zaimah Zakaria was appointed to the Board on 25 March 2018.

She holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (Finance) from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). She is a Certified International Social Etiquette Consultant and a member of Persatuan Pasaran Kewangan Malaysia (PPKM).

Datin Zaimah was formerly the Executive Vice President – Group Strategic Business and Regional Integration of RHB Bank Berhad from April 2008 until March 2015. Prior to this, she was the Head of Treasury at Al Rajhi Bank Malaysia and had assumed the post of Senior General Manager at Alliance Investment Bank for five years since 2001.

Having served various senior positions in the financial industry, Datin Zaimah has vast experience and knowledge in banking especially in areas related to investment and treasury.

Datin Zaimah currently sits on the boards of Generali Insurance Malaysia Berhad (formerly known as AXA Affin General Insurance Berhad) and Impact Research Consultancy Sdn. Bhd.

Puan Saleena Mohd Ali was appointed to the Board on 1 November 2023.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the Woodbury University, United States of America (USA).

Puan Saleena is a seasoned professional with an extensive background in various areas in Information Technology such as IT Risk Management, IT Operations, and IT Solutions. Her extensive career of over 30 years has provided her with a wealth of expertise.

Puan Saleena was appointed as the Director of Infomina Sdn. Bhd. in 2021 and was subsequently appointed as the Chairman Infomina Berhad in 2022.

Puan Suraya Binti Hassan was appointed to the Board on 2 January 2024.

She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA Hons) from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

Puan Suraya possesses over two decades of professional experience in the Banking and Financial Institutions industry, specializing in Retail Banking and Insurance.

She possesses extensive expertise in the Financial Institution industry, having been associated with Citibank from 1995 to 2012. Her tenure at Citibank included roles at Citibank Berhad, Malaysia (1995-2002) and Citibank N.A, Singapore (2002-2004). As a Regional Credit Operations Specialist at Citibank Singapore, she provided operational and leadership oversight for Citibank operations in the Asia Pacific Region (APAC), overseeing countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Australia, Korea, Indonesia, Guam, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Following this, she served as the Senior Vice President of Consumer Credit Operations at Citibank N.A. Thailand from 2005 to 2006 and subsequently held the position of Director of Consumer Credit Operations at Citibank Berhad, Malaysia from 2006 to 2012.

After her tenure at Citibank, she furthered her career by serving as the Executive Vice President of Head of Consumer Credit Operations at CIMB Malaysia from 2012 to 2013. Subsequently, she held the position of Executive Vice President of Sales and Retail Distribution at Ambank Group from 2013 to 2015.

She also had a short stint in Prudential Assurance Malaysia Bhd as the Chief Partnership Distribution Head in 2016.

Presently, Puan Suraya is a Director at Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarga Berhad, a role she has been in since 2019. 

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kamaruzaman Noordin was appointed to the Board on 2 January 2024. Concurrently, he is also the Deputy Chairman of Shariah Committee a role he has held since 1 January 2023.

He obtained a PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of Wales, United Kingdom. He has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) along with a First Class Honours in Bachelor in Shariah from the University of Malaya.

Currently, he holds the position of Deputy Dean of Value Creation and Enterprise and is an Associate Professor of the Department of Shariah and Management of the University of Malaya.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kamaruzaman also holds other roles serving as the Chairman of Shariah Committee of Affin Islamic Bank, Member of Shariah Committee TEKUN Nasional, Member of Shariah Committee PruBSN Takaful, Member of the Shariah Advisory Committee of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and the Registered Shariah Adviser of Securities Commission Malaysia.

Previously, he was the Chairman and member of Shariah Advisory Committee for Kenanga Investment Bank Berhad (2012-2020).

Encik Jay Khairil Jeremy Abdullah was appointed as Chief Executive and Executive Director of BSN on 3 February 2021.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business and Finance from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Scotland, United Kingdom and a Higher Diploma in Management Accounting (LCCI Higher) from Systematic Group of Colleges Malaysia. He is a Chartered Banker and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. He is also a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Encik Jay Khairil is a seasoned banking professional with over 20 years of experience, whereby his last role was the Group Chief Internal Auditor of the Alliance Bank Financial Group.

Prior to that, he was with BSN as the Chief Financial Officer where he has helped the Bank achieve strong financial performance through prudent management of assets and liabilities, cost optimisation measures and relevant process improvements.

Encik Jay Khairil was also the Regional Head of Audit for CIMB Group and Deputy Director of Internal Audit with Bank Negara Malaysia.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

Corporate Governance is an important element and receives the attention of BSN Stakeholders. The Bank is committed on efforts to adhere to corporate governance practices that will lead to a more propitious future. A strong corporate governance foundation will ensure that BSN becomes a solid financial institution with continued support from all its stakeholders.

In line with the Corporate Governance Policy Document (BNM/RH/PD 035-5), BSN’s Board of Directors has formed four board committees. In carrying out supervisory tasks, the committees have held meetings where almost all the committees have had more meetings than the fixed standard.
